Priced by the Year: Snails and Picpoul for £19.27 at L'Escargot

L'Escargot's Monday bargain rolls on — and the number on the bill is no accident. Six snails, a chilled glass of Picpoul, and a nod to 1927, all for £19.27.

Priced by the Year: Snails and Picpoul for £19.27 at L'Escargot

L'Escargot's 'Monday Madness' is turning the slowest day of the week into the most tempting. After a runaway oyster deal, the Greek Street institution's latest Monday offer — lunch and dinner both — is six of its famous snails, baked green and garlicky in their cast-iron dish, with a chilled glass of Picpoul, for £19.27.

Note the price. Not £19.25, not a round £20, but precisely £19.27 — a toast, in pounds and pence, to 1927, the year L'Escargot took up its home at 48 Greek Street. Next year the restaurant marks a century at the address, and the chairman, Brian Clivaz, has it 'ninety-nine not out'; expect a rolling run of these gloriously specific bargains through the celebration year.

The wine is fitting too: a crisp Picpoul de Pinet bottled under the label of the restaurant's own dining club, The Snail Club — practically designed for a plate of snails. It may be the best-value, and certainly the best-dated, lunch in Soho. Book at lescargot.co.uk or on (020) 7439 7474.
